Health Benefits of Cinnamon and Co
Winter is still around, leaving us with yet some more cold days, curling up into fluffy blankets and of course deliciously spiced meals and cosy beverages. Some of you might have figured out that I am a passionate tea drinker, especially when it comes to my favourite mint/cinnamon tea. Well, I think you can already guess which is my favourite spice when it is cold outside… yep, cinnamon!
But before praising cinnamon, there are some further spices that I really love. My all-time favourite ‘almond-bread’-spice, which I bought at a grocery store, contains them basically all…Cinnamon (of course), cardamom, chopped lemon & orange peel, vanilla and star-anise. Just like cinnamon these are highly delicious spices when used properly and in an adequate amount. They have been prized for their medicinal properties and health benefits for thousands of years.
So c’mon cinnamon, show me what you got!
Cinnamon contains a big amount of highly potent polyphenol antioxidants (wow, some heavy words here), which makes it a great protection against oxidative damage caused by free radicals. In fact just as garlic and oregano do as well,

The antioxidants in cinnamon also have some anti-inflammatory effects which can help lower the risk of diseases.

3. Reduce heart diseases
Cinnamon can reduce your cholesterol and triglycerides while improving the ‘good’ cholesterol (HDL) and reduce your blood pressure. When combined, these factors may drastically cut the risk of getting a heart disease. So let’s get wasted with cinnamon.

4. Improve Insulin-Sensitivity
Consuming cinnamon can help you to reduce your insulin resistance, by which you are helping this incredibly important hormone to do its job. This job means to transport blood sugar from the bloodstream into cells to regulate your metabolism and energy use.
5. Lower Blood Sugar Level
It has been shown that cinnamon decreases the amount of glucose entering the bloodstream after your meal, by interfering with a lot of digestive enzymes slowing down the breakdown of carbs for example. Cinnamon can lower fasting blood sugar levels up to 10-30%. To obtain such effect, you only have to consume about 1- 6 gr of cinnamon a day (that’s 1/2 to 2 tbsp.)

6. Bye cancer
Studies and research showed that cinnamon may have a protective effect against cancer as it activates the protective antioxidant response in human colon cells.
Lemon & orange peel are also great
Other spices with a great number of health benefits are: ginger, turmeric, cumin seeds or cloves.
How I use my favourite spices:
- Mostly I sprinkle some cinnamon into my mint tea. This gives you a refreshing but kind of cosy feeling.
- They are also a nice addition to anything you can bake… Like protein pancakes, protein waffles, warm cinnamon buns that come fresh out of the oven
- These spices add also a wonderful flavour to your warm self-made casein fluff, vanilla pudding or warm milk rice.
Sounds heavenly, doesn’t it?
As you can tell, spices can do way more than just flavour up our plates, they are also gread for your health. And the best thing is that you can find them in any supermarket at a very decent price. And remember, even though these are all great winter spices, you can as well use them all year around! So, spice up and stay healthy!
